Secrets for Stronger Nails

A stronger nail is built with daily habits, not with a single polish.

By Nail Style

A strong nail does not appear overnight. You notice it when the plate stops bending at every touch, when the free edge no longer splits into layers, and when the natural color looks even. That result comes from watching the nail calmly and repeating a few habits, rather than switching remedies every week.

The cuticle is the barrier that protects the nail as it grows. A light oil at night, and again after you wash your hands, keeps that skin flexible. When it dries out and is pushed back hard, the plate grows uneven and breaks before it reaches a comfortable length. Gentle pushing, and only of loose skin, is more useful than cutting.

Water and detergent soften the nail more than they seem to. Wear gloves when you wash dishes or clean, and dry the side walls well, not only the back of the hand. A nail that stays wet for a long time becomes soft; when it dries all at once, that same spot snaps at the slightest knock.

A base coat is not decoration. A thin layer before color keeps dark pigments from staining and reduces direct friction from the file. File in one direction, with a fine grit, and leave the edge slightly rounded. Very sharp corners collect pressure and are usually the first place to split.

If brittleness continues for several weeks, space out harsh removals and look at the rhythm of your meals. Keratin needs protein, rest, and time. A healthy nail grows slowly, and respecting that pace matters more than chasing a length the plate cannot yet hold.
